Offaly Traveller Movement, in collaboration with Marian Pilgrimages, embarked on a profound journey to Italy from the 6th to the 13th of June 2023. The pilgrimage aimed to delve into the rich spiritual heritage of Rome, Assisi, and San Giovanni Rotondo, while also nurturing a sense of community and devotion among the travelers.
The pilgrimage commenced in Rome, where participants gathered at St. Peter’s Square, joining the faithful for the Papal Audience. The journey continued with a visit to the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, a significant shrine for the devotion to Divine Mercy. Exploring the historical center of Rome became a highlight as pilgrims strolled through ancient cobbled streets, passing iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. Tradition dictated a coin tossed into the fountain, symbolizing a promise to return to the “Eternal City.” Guided tours of St. Peter’s Basilica and Basilica of St. Mary Major deepened the pilgrims’ understanding of Catholicism’s historical and spiritual significance.
Departing from Rome, the pilgrimage headed towards Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. A guided tour illuminated the medieval town’s charm, including visits to the Basilica of St. Francis and the resting place of St. Clare, founder of the Order of the Poor Clares. The group paid homage to Blessed Carlo Acutis at the Sanctuary of Renunciation, reflecting on his profound connection to Assisi and his beatification in 2020. Leisure time allowed pilgrims to immerse themselves in Assisi’s unique atmosphere, culminating in a Torchlight Procession at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
San Giovanni Rotondo beckoned next, with a stop in Lanciano, site of the first Eucharistic Miracle of the Catholic Church. At San Giovanni Rotondo, pilgrims delved into the life of St. Pio, receiving blessings with relics associated with the humble friar, including his glove and crucifix. A visit to the Capuchin friary shed light on the spiritual legacy of the “poor friar who prays.” In the town of Monte Sant’Angelo, pilgrims learned about the apparitions of St. Michael the Archangel, further enriching their spiritual journey. The pilgrimage concluded with a visit to St. Matthew’s Monastery, where participants received blessings with relics of St. Matthew and Holy Oil, cementing their spiritual experience in Italy.
Throughout the pilgrimage, the Offaly Traveller Movement fostered a sense of community, solidarity, and reverence, ensuring a transformative journey for all participants.
